HTTPS prevents intruders from being able to passively listen to communications between websites and its’ users.
Unprotected HTTP requests can potentially reveal information about the behaviors and identities of users, so HTTPS is needed for both types of websites that handle sensitive information and ordinary websites.
HTTPS protects from intruders' observations, as they look at the aggregate browsing activities of users to make inferences about their behaviors and intentions and to de-anonymize their identities.
